Our Commitment to Safeguarding
The Parish of English Martyrs and St Cuthbert, in full alignment with the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, is entirely committed to the safeguarding and protection of all children, young people, and adults at risk within our community. We recognise that safeguarding is a shared responsibility and an absolute, integral part of the life and ministry of the Church. Our parish strictly adheres to the National Catholic Safeguarding Policies and Procedures set out by the Catholic Safeguarding Standards Agency (CSSA), ensuring that all our practices meet the highest standards of care, transparency, and accountability.
A Culture of Safety and Respect
Our commitment flows from the Catholic teaching that every human being has value and dignity, having been created in the image and likeness of God. It is our fundamental duty to value, support, and protect all people from harm. We actively strive to foster a culture of safety where everyone feels secure, respected, and listened to. All parish activities are carefully planned to take place in an environment where the welfare of our most vulnerable members is the paramount concern, and we remain dedicated to maintaining a safe space that guards against any form of abuse, neglect, or maltreatment.
Safe Recruitment and Continuous Training
To uphold this commitment practically, the parish implements a rigorous process of safe recruitment for all individuals who minister to or work with children and vulnerable adults, whether they are paid employees or unpaid volunteers. This includes mandatory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks and comprehensive referencing. Furthermore, all our clergy, staff, and volunteers are required to undertake ongoing safeguarding training provided by the Diocese. This ensures our community is fully equipped to recognise the signs of abuse and knows exactly how to respond appropriately: Listen, Record, and Refer.
Reporting Concerns and Support
We take every allegation or concern regarding abuse with the utmost seriousness, acting upon them swiftly, transparently, and in strict accordance with diocesan guidelines. If you have any concerns about the welfare of a child or adult at risk, or if you wish to report an incident, we urge you to speak to our Parish Safeguarding Representative (PSR) immediately. Alternatively, you can contact the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle Safeguarding Team directly at the St. Vincent’s Diocesan Offices.
If you believe someone is in immediate danger of harm, please contact the emergency services by dialling 999.

Message from Bishop Stephen
"Dear Friends, I would like to welcome you to the Safeguarding pages of our Diocesan website. Our diocesan family of parishes is called to minister the love of Jesus. Jesus ministered to the outsiders, the most vulnerable in society. The Gospels tell us Jesus welcomed children and he blessed them..."Contact
